Postdoctoral Research Opening

The Copp lab at UC Irvine is immediately seeking a postdoctoral researcher to join the lab’s effort to expand the self-assembly rules and functionality of DNA nanotechnology by harnessing metal-mediated base pairing. This research is at the intersection of soft matter physics, chemistry, and nanoscience.

Our multidisciplinary research team studies how sequence-encoded biomolecules and synthetic polymers can serve as programmable building blocks for novel photonic and electronic nanomaterials. The project specifically involves determination of the structures formed by silver-mediated pairing of DNA and the mechanical and electronic properties of the resulting nanostructures. The postdoctoral researcher will have the opportunity to pursue this interdisciplinary fundamental research project and interact with PIs and researchers with diverse scientific backgrounds.

The eligible candidate should have earned, or be about to earn, a PhD in materials science, physics, chemistry, or other relevant discipline and have research experience in structural DNA nanotechnology or other macromolecular self-assembly. Significant expertise with atomic force microscopy (AFM) and/or cryo electron microscopy (cryoEM) and strong oral and scientific writing skills are required (candidates with significant optical microscopy experience may also be considered). Preference will be given to candidates who also demonstrate proficiency in techniques including HPLC/MS, CD spectroscopy, gel electrophoresis, image processing, and fluorescence microscopy.

Selection will place emphasis on expertise and experience, previous publication record, and letters of recommendation. The Copp lab values the inclusion of people from all backgrounds in scientific research and strongly encourages those from underrepresented backgrounds to apply.

Complete applications may be submitted at https://recruit.ap.uci.edu/JPF06563 and must include the following:

  • Cover Letter specifically describing the applicant’s career goals and how skills can be applied to the work in this lab
  • Detailed CV, including a list of publications
  • At least three references
  • Inclusive Excellence Activities Statement – statement addressing how past and/or potential contributions to inclusive excellence will advance UCI’s Commitment to Inclusive Excellence. See our guidance for writing an inclusive excellence activities statement, https://ap.uci.edu/faculty/guidance/ieactivities/
